California on the road:

8 hotels to stay along the way

You can plan this trip in a million different ways and you can choose to stay in a motel, 5-star hotel or in a hostel, according to your needs and budget. Here is our own selection, 8 hotels, standard room with private bathroom and some breakfasts included. We had our car parked in front of our room and the ‘No Vacancy’ sign made us feeling like we were in a movie.

WHEN

TO GO

SAN FRANCISCO, California

COVENTRY INN ☆☆☆ (score on booking: 8.3)

1901 Lombard Street, Marina District

San Francisco, CA 94123

SFO is quite an expensive city and this hotel seemed to be a good value for money, well located close to the main attractions; our room was wide and clean, with a huge bed.

MARIPOSA, California

MINERS INN ☆☆ (score on booking: 8.0)

5181 Highway 49 North

Mariposa, CA 95338

Mariposa was just a place to stay overnight between SFO and Yosemite Park; we found this hotel room and furniture a bit obsolete & the bathroom not so spacious but it was ok for one night. There was the waffle machine, fresh fruit and water bottle refilling station at breakfast.

FRESNO, California

BEST WESTERN VILLAGE INN ☆☆☆ (score on booking: 8.2)

3110 North Blackstone Avenue

Fresno, CA 93703

We have chosen Best Western hotels several times for this trip and we were never disappointed: spacious and clean room, nice breakfast and close to good restaurants.

BAKERSFIELD, California

COUNTRY INN & SUITES BY RADISSON ☆☆ (score on booking: 8.5)

2310 Wible Road

Bakersfield, CA 93304

Very nice motel recently built with a modern design: they gave us a free upgrade to a suite with living room included! Chocolate chip cookies at reception desk for guests were highly appreciated.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada

CAESARS PALACE HOTEL & CASINO ☆☆☆☆ (score on booking: 8.3)

3570 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas Strip

Las Vegas, NV 89109

One night in Las Vegas deserved the Caesars, we had no doubts. It's insanely big, luxurious, bizarre with a freaky pool but you'll pay it like a 3-star hotel. Here hotel fares are quite low to attract any kind of guests and invite them to spend their money at the Casino. And if you find a nice guy at reception desk who'll make a free upgrade of your room to a suite as big as your flat in town, well you just hit the jackpot. Pool view from our window and a bathroom wide as a 3-room apartment. It's Vegas, folks - anything can happen here.

PAGE, Arizona

BEST WESTERN PLUS AT LAKE POWELL ☆☆☆ (score on booking: 8.3)

208 North Lake Powell Boulevard

Page, AZ 86040

Another Best Western hotel for us, perfectly located to visit Page main attractions and close to restaurants and shops. Nice room with 2 big beds, average continental breakfast and water bootle refilling stations at every floor.

KINGMAN, Arizona

BEST WESTERN PLUS A WAYFARER’S INN & SUITES ☆☆☆ (score on booking: 8.9)

2815 East Andy Devine Avenue

Kingman, AZ 86401

The best and last Best Western hotel of our trip: nice staff who gave us useful advice, a lovely 50s diner included. We could see the car from our room window, this motel had the typical horseshoe shape structure and offered a really comprehensive breakfast buffet with pastries, fruit and tasty muffins.

LOS ANGELES, California

EL ROYALE HOTEL - NEAR UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD ☆☆☆☆

(score on booking: 9.2)

11117 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City

Los Angeles, CA 91604

It's quite hard to choose where to stay in LA, a city of endless possibilities: we are happy we've found El Royale hotel. You can reach the Universal Studios with a 10 minute walk (avoiding to pay the daily car parking there), you're close to Hollywood and Beverly Hills and you'll have a room that seems like a small flat with your own garage included. The staff was super friendly and nice, they gave us delicious cookies to bring back home, useful advice and smiles all the time. For all sushi-lovers there's a good fusion Japanese restaurant on the opposite side of the street and a nice burger bar 5 minutes away from the hotel. We would only improve the breakfast a bit but we highly recommend it for all the above mentioned good reasons.
