Kenya:

what you need to know before you go & what to pack

Currency Exchange

We usually change some money before leaving for a new destination and we also did it for this trip: we exchanged some euro with Kenyan Shilling at a Forexchange point in our city, Turin. It's very easy: you book the sum online and collect and pay at the desk. You will use the local currency to buy some flour and cookies for women and children you'll meet, souvenirs and local crafts to bring back home even if dollars and euro will be accepted almost everywhere.

Vaccines

We spent a lot of time on this point, making research, consulting our doctor, looking for advice: we finally decided not to get any vaccines before leaving for Kenya, we just took some probiotics and everything went right.

Consult your doctor

We always suggest to consult your doctor before leaving, of course we did it too. We packed probiotics, antibiotics and antihistamines in particular.

When to book safari

You could contact local agencies before leaving to get some info about prices and choose the best accomodation; we did it but then we decided to book our safari there, comparing prices with Beach Boys ones.

Internet

We did not modify our phone plan and we did not buy any 15 euro sim card there to get the internet service on our smartphone: we simply used resort wi-fi. And you know what, even if it wasn't always super fast all the time, this did not annoy us at all. Enjoy your holiday!

What to pack?

Autan tropical bug spray, use it at least three times a day, especially after sunset.

High sunscreen protection, use it both on the beach and during safar

Water shoes, to walk on the seabed during low tide - we bought the plain ones at Decathlon

Torch, binoculars and a small travel bag for safari, if you are planning to spend at least one night in the savannah you'll be able to bring with you a small bag only

Notebooks, pencils, toys for children, if you are planning to visit an orphanage, they will be so happy to receive some presents from you

Old clothes and everything you want to give Beach Boys and women selling their crafts on the beach

We recommend to wear light-weight breathable fabric clothes during safari and always bring with you a sweatshirt and something to cover your head and neck.
